Casino “The Beef Capital” – Our Kind of Town
The picturesque town of Casino rests on the banks of the Richmond River. It is situated at the junction of the Summerland Way and the Bruxner Highway and has a population of approximately 12,000 people. As well, the town businesses service a large outlying rural population.
The town gained its name from Casino Station, originally owned by Clarke Irving. Irving named the station after Cassino or Monte Cassino in Italy. Relations with the sister city in Italy are still propagated today.
Casino is 256kms south of Brisbane and 733kms north of Sydney. The close proximity to Brisbane makes the area an ideal retreat for professionals working in the city.
Casino is widely known as the “Beef Capital” as the surrounding districts provide lush pastures for the production of prime quality beef. Each year the town hosts the annual Beef Week Festival in May. Here the town opens its doors to many local, national and international visitors.
The rich flats are also very amenable to dairying, soya bean and corn production; while the ridges and foothills are very conducive to farm forestry operations and home to much of Australia’s rare and endangered plant and animal life; of particular note is the spectacular Richmond Range spotted gum.
The area abounds with bio-diversity and is very appealing because of its sub-temperate climate with an average rainfall of 1098mms, scenic beauty, national parks and wilderness areas.
Last and importantly, Casino is a great place to raise a family. The region has great sporting facilities with many famous sporting identities growing up here. At Christmas, much of the town’s population sojourn’s to the close beachside town of Evans Head. Here fun, excitement and laughter ensues all the holiday season. It is a wonderful chance to catch up with people they sometimes don’t get to see through the year. In doing so, the sense of community, caring and comradeship is continually replenished.
